Institute for Cell Mimetic Space Exploration

Our Vision

The Institute for Cell Mimetic Space Exploration (CMISE) will identify, develop, promote, and commercialize nano-, bio-, and information technologies for sensing, control, and integration of complex multilevel natural and artificial systems.

Our Approach

We will mimic the adaptive ability of natural cells to structure themselves into ever more complex systems. Cells are the fundamental units of life and are nanosystems that self-organize into higher level organisms with increasingly sophisticated functionalities. The
remarkable process of hierarchical cellular organization is orchestrated through the management of vast arrays of nanotransducers regulated by the genetic information within the cells. In both natural and artificial systems, reams of information from multiple scales must be acquired and acted upon at the appropriate levels. These cells could be both biological and artifi cial, and they may span orders of magnitude in length scales. This cell mimetic approach, the application of Nature's strategy of distributed multilevel
information management, is the most promising way to seamlessly link such disparate systems.

California NanoSystems Institute

A strong 21st century economy demands technological breakthroughs which will orchestrate the control of structure and function on the nanometer-scale level. It is at this level where the top-down practices of electronics manufacturing merge with the bottom-up creation and growth mechanisms that have long been the cornerstones of biology and are increasingly the hallmarks of contemporary chemistry. Forging these breakthroughs requires the establishment of research and educational infrastructures that are invested with the power and purpose to overcome disciplinary divides and surmount institutional barriers in a manner that has never been witnessed before in the crucial arenas of discovery and invention.

The challenge which faces academia is to foster innovation and seek partnerships with commercial organizations and individual citizens in a society to a degree and at a frequency which reaches far beyond any that has been contemplated in the past.

The CNSI has a mission to create a unique culture and enlightened leadership, centered on the UCLA and UCSB campuses, which will serve California and the nation as a whole. We will provide all the ingredients to sustain an intellectual life within the institute that is second to none. We will provide the world class facilities commensurate with a physical environment that is supportive of intimate collaborations among California’s university, industrial, and national laboratory scientists, and engineers. We will develop the appropriate educational programs to cultivate simultaneously in students expertise that is highly focused alongside perspectives that are sufficiently broad for them to appreciate the ‘big picture’. Their education will be strongly directed toward the fundamentals, yet they will be made cognizant of the fact that applications can be the greatest research engines of all.

The excitement that we will generate will be attractive to the innate talent of the California population. Our mission is to create a broadly-based, integrated infrastructure of facilities, personnel and education programs that will underpin the science and engineering of complex nanosystems. Through collaboration and partnerships, the CNSI will ensure the speedy and robust transfer of nanosystems-based technologies into the marketplace. By integrating distinctively innovative departures in education with uniquely constituted research opportunities, the CNSI will produce broadly trained scientists and engineers capable of sustaining California’s leadership in nanotechnology for years to come.

The World's Leader in Fluorescent Reference Standards

Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are increasingly relying upon fluorescence measurements in drug discovery, research and development, method development and validation, and in quality control in GLP and GMP compliance. As a consequence, fluorescent reference materials and standards have grown in importance as more state-of-the-art instrumentation relies upon fluorescence for both clinical and research applications. From high throughput screening in bioinformatics and new drug discovery to routine blood tests in hospitals, the importance of instrument validation has steadily increased. Both wavelength and absolute intensity calibration is now needed to assure the accuracy and reliability of fluorescent plate readers. Traditional methods, such as the ASTM quinine sulfate solution method, of calibration are labor intensive and less reliable. Solid-state standards offer both convenience and ease of use. MATECH's inorganic solid-state standards offer superb stability.

MATECH offers 20 distinct Fluorescent Reference Standards. They are provided in 5 configurations and four colors (Red, Green, Blue, and Violet). Our standards are offered in top reading 96 wellplate, bottom reading 96 wellplate, and top reading 384 wellplate platforms. We also offer both top reading and bottom reading 96 wellplate Dilution Series Standards.

MATECH's Fluorescent Reference Standards can be used to verify instrument alignment and detect misalignment, track instrument drift over time, normalize assay data over time on one instrument, and normalize assay data collected from multiple instruments (transfer standard). Our Dilution Series standards can be used to quantify instrument linearity and sensitivity.

Our Fluorescent Reference Standards are Class I {510(k) exempt} Medical Devices and MATECH is a Licensed Medical Device Manufacturer with the FDA and the State of California. All product is manufactured under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and are traced to NIST Standard Reference Materials (SRMs). This makes them ideal for GLP and GMP environments.
