ÊPresents

ãTHE MAKING OF MARKETPLACE. WHAT GOES ON AIR AND WHAT DOESNâTä with Kai Ryssdal

Breakfast Meeting

Wednesday Morning, April 12, 2006

8:00 a.m. Registration and Networking

8:15 am Breakfast 8:30 am Session talks begin

Omni Hotel, Los Angeles ð 251 S. Olive Street

Session Topic ··ãFROM THE FRANK STANTON STUDIOS IN LOS ANGELES, IâM KAI RYSSDALä

Kai Ryssdal is the senior host of Marketplace, National Public Radioâs daily business program. Marketplace is aired by more than 330 public radio stations across the United States, and is heard by over 8.1 million unique listeners over the course of a week.Ê While many radio stations cover the markets with a terse ãhere are the numbersä approach, the award-winning Marketplace is know for its in-depth coverage of key economic issues.Ê Marketplace manages to make business news entertaining. ãI Hate Business and Economicsä one listener wrote, ãbut I love your show.ä ãMarketplace is interesting, fun and öto be honest- a little smartassä says Jim Russel, Marketplaceâs GM. You can always tell the direction of the markets by the showâs theme song. When the markets are mixed ãIt Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got that Swing)ä is played in the background. When the markets are down ãStormy Weatherä is the theme. And of course, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up, the song of the day is ãWeâre in the Money.ä

Kai Ryssdalâs smart commentary, sense of humor and keen business sense help make the show what it is. Please join us for a breakfast meeting when Kai Ryssdal will speak about the making of the daily radio program, including what items are chosen to go on air, and which items are not. We are looking forward to this interesting speaker who dispels that myth that business and finance are boring!

Marketplace airs weekdays on KPCC 89.3 at 3pm and 6:30pm. It airs on KCRW 89.9 at 2pm.

Meet the Speaker

Kai Ryssdal took the reins as host of Marketplace in August 2005. He previously hosted the Marketplace Morning Report for more than four years.Ê Before joining Marketplace, Kai was a reporter and substitute host for The California Report, a news and information program distributed to public radio stations throughout California by KQED-FM in San Francisco. His radio work has won first place awards from the Radio and Television News Directors Association and the national Public Radio News Directors Association.

After graduating from Emory University in Atlanta, Kai spent eight years in the United States Navy, first flying from the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, and then as a Pentagon staff officer. Before his career in public radio, Kai was a member of the United States Foreign Service and served in Ottawa, Canada, and Beijing, China.

SESSION TOPIC:

Big Buildup or Digging a Hole? The Outlook for Construction and the Economy in the United States and Los Angeles

While all eyes--and tongues--seem to be focused on the incredible housing boom, nonresidential construction has also been setting records in activity and employment. But nonresidential construction has been buffeted by volatile materials costs, supply problems, and uncertain funding for public projects.

What role will construction locally and nationally play in economic investment growth--or slowdown--in the next year? How will materials inflation, spot shortages, and infrastructure funding squeezes affect different construction segments?

Ken Simonson will peer into his dusty crystal ball to answer these and other questions.
