Many of the United Statesâ
large industries from the second half of the 20th Century are
facing a great need for change to compete in today's global marketplace.
We can no longer work in our "silo" world of traditional
development and innovations. We must be fluid in our movement
for growth and expansion to look beyond our own walls and create
a new path. Are we passing on to the next generation the characteristics
of compassionate and effective leaders, and giving them strong
internal foundations to be able to expand these ideas into the
global marketplace? Are we sharing the teachings and inspirational
characteristics of the freedom to dream and create, expanding
our introspective knowledge base to become innovators with no
boundaries, and to grow and lead a family, business, community,
state or nation? Have we been too busy in our quest for monetary
gains to consider these important points? Or have we, as Americans,
become too complacent, assuming our next generation understands
the foundations of Americaâs
freedom to build and grow beyond oneâs imagination·.
ÊÊÊÊ
The greatest challenge we are facing today is to overcome
our global image of an ãentitlementä society that is losing its
creative and innovative edge to those around us. Yet, I believe
we can change our course and continue to grow as an economically
sound nation.Ê In closing,
the question I ask each and everyone of us· Has the ãworld become
flatä or have we not shared the legacy of this great nation with
our next generation?Ê
I
invite all of you to reach out to the next generation--become a
mentor, a friend and a
leader, and share the freedoms and unique perspectives of the great
life fulfilling experiences one will gain as a compassionate American
Leader·

EUROPEAN UNION
DATA PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS
ÊÊÊÊIt
has become very common in todayâs world to conduct business on the
Internet. Furthermore, many more companies are doing business on
an International scale by having distributors, dealers, or branch
offices in foreign countries including the European Union (EU).
There are now 25 EU countries and the list continues to grow.
If
your company is collecting personal data of individuals in the EU,
that data is subject to very stringent protection requirements that
are set forth in the European Union Data Protection Directive. Unlike
the
US, all such data
about an individual belongs to the individual and the individual
has the right to determine how his or her information is used.Ê Improper use of this information subjects the
user to criminal sanctions.Ê The
Directive applies to the processing of the personal data, including
the collection, recording, organization, storage and use of information
relating to an identified or identifiable natural person. Such information
is usually name, address, social security number, credit card number,
etc., but it can also be contact information such as a cell phone
number. Anyone processing such data must institute policies and
practices that comply with the Directive. The US Department of Commerce
and the EU have negotiated Safe Harbor
principles
that if complied with assure that the Directives requirements are
met. To obtain information about these requirements, visit www.export.gov/safeharbor.

ANGEL FUND INVESTMENTS ARE ON AN UP TICK FOR THIS YEAR·
California Technology Ventures (CTV) has been seeing a lot of success
with their medical device investments.Ê
In some cases, nanotechnologies and advances in materials
science have enabled more effective solutions in terms of patient
outcomes and of a physician's ability to provide service in a
timely and cost effective manner.Ê
In all cases, success is highly dependent upon management
focus and ability to execute.Ê
New
investments are being funded through a new fund, CTV II, a $100 million fund.Ê
Investments to date in this fund include:
InSound Medical
- a creator of next generation hearing solutions.Ê

Kiyon
- a software company enabling high bandwidth 802.11 mesh networking
for business
automation and consumer applications http://www.kiyon.comÊ
SurgiQuest
- a new approach to minimally invasive surgical access through
the use of an "air curtain."
We
continue to look for new investment opportunities in early stage
information technology and life science.Ê

HOW
DO ENTREPRENEURS SUCCESSFULLY TURN THEIR
CONCEPTS INTO COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS?
Technological
innovation created from our universities has driven the local, regional
and global economies for the past 50 years. Our government has funded
this academic research at a comparable level to that of the industry
sector.Ê However, less than 5% of this government-funded
research creates consumer products. Why is this commercialization
rate so inadequate? The mixing of innovative science with good business
strategies is a high-risk venture for most early stage companies.Ê Turning new concepts into viable commercial
products can be a time consuming and costly experience.Ê
In
America and especially
in Southern California, the opportunity
for entrepreneurs to be mentored and funded by the pre-venture capital
community, something often called ãAngel Investors,ä has been well
established over the past ten years.Ê
These investors play an important role in the flow of ideas
into products.Ê Angels enhance
the rate of success; by supplying funding for testing these concepts;
determining the feasibility of manufacturing the product and carefully
defining the customer/market.Ê The
venture capital community will then have the ability to partner
with this start-up company to effectively launch the product into
the market.Ê This process
for creating a profitable business enterprise will lead to better
return on investments.
