The history-making events of the past month have delivered life-changing realities. Supporting Member, The Honorable Chris Cox talks about our Nation's freedoms in an upcoming article in Forbes Magazine. Billy Robbins, President of our organization has also shared his thoughts on these trying times. We would like to encourage you to send us your thoughts on "What Freedom Means to You" to info@fortedesigns.net. We will feature some of your letters in our upcoming newsletters. We have also focused this month on the life science industry in order to prepare you for a thought provoking forum on
"Ventures, Innovations, and Economic Forecast" relating to the industry on
October 31st at Huntington Medical Research Institutes.

A Message From Technolink Association President Billy A. Robbins:

As a country, we have just experienced what could be declared a "wake-up call". The fallout from this horrifying experience will change all of our lives in ways we cannot imagine. As has been the case throughout history, adversity will present opportunities for us to generate new ideas and to create new and exciting products and systems that will benefit all of mankind. Let us all have the vision to recognize these opportunities and the perseverance to productively utilize them. I look forward to seeing you on October 31st.

NEWS FROM WASHINGTON: THE HONORABLE CHRIS COX
Writes About Our Nation's Freedom

Congressman Chris Cox, 47th district, California, in an article to run in the October 15th issue of Forbes Magazine, writes about the importance of maintaining our civil liberties. Congressman Cox addresses the recent assault on our Nation's freedoms -- political, religious and economic. He asks us to consider the potential side-effects of some laws being proposed (in order to help win the war), which could erode our freedom. Cox warns of the danger of adopting new criminal procedures for short-run effect and stresses the importance of testing each proposal under the Constitution. He emphasizes that the battle against terrorism is an occasion not for doubting the Constitution, but for respecting it.

A SCIENTIFIC PERSPECTIVE: THE STEM CELL DEBATE
By Edward J. A. Pope, Ph.D.

Embryonic stem cells are being touted as a potential breakthrough technology for treating everything from cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, spinal cord damage, and even AIDS. In order to accomplish any of these feats, the embryonic stem cells must be differentiated into specific types of cells (e.g. beta cells for diabetes)
and then implanted into the patient.

Inasmuch as any cells derived from embryonic stem cells are likely to be immunogenic, some method of preventing immuno-rejection of these "foreign" cells is necessary. Solgene Therapeutics LLC enables the encapsulation (in porous ceramic materials) of living, genetically altered cells that secrete therapeutic compounds. After implantation, the encapsulating material shields the implanted cells from the host's immune system; the porous barrier, meanwhile, allows an exchange of nutrients and cell-secreted therapeutic molecules. The cells thus continue to function and to mimic a natural organ, continually secreting biotech drugs for many months. Solgene believes its technology can be applied to a variety of protein drugs; targets of current programs range from Interleukin 2 to Erythropoietin to bone-growth factors. Solgene Therapeutics, LLC was founded by Technolink Advisory Board Member Edward J. A. Pope, Ph.D.--805.991.8500.

SOME STOCK PRICES DID RISE IN SEPTEMBER

Wall Street recently bid up shares in mobile phone providers in anticipation of increased cell phone sales and subscriptions because of the September 11th terrorist attacks. AT&T Wireless jumped $1.02 on the New York Stock Exchange. Analysts said the stock increase reflects growing anecdotal evidence that consumers who have never owned a cell phone are heading into stores. Guzman & Co. analyst Patrick Comack explains, "People want to have a cell phone at all times in case of emergency now."* In order to improve driver's safety and awareness on the road, AT&T Wireless, Inc., is providing hands-free earpieces at no cost to all its subscribers. *Information extracted from a Los Angeles Times article from September 20, 2001.
