May 2001 Newsflash

A Special Message from the Editor:

Spring is finally here - the season that reflects rebirth and change. And change is what we are seeing …with the highs and lows of the stock market (a surprise to all, especially Wall Street) thanks to Fed Chairman, Alan Greenspan. The uncertainty of our future economy continues to grow; some forecasters are predicting a rosy summer while others are relying on past data to predict the future and maybe even a recession. Maybe we will surprise the world and manage to re-invent ourselves and survive the dot.com crash and the electricity crises and keep moving on, building the infrastructure for the real "new economy". Join distinguish panel of Visionaries at the July 18th Forum to discuss many exciting and explosive topics.

Warmest Regards, Ssusan Forte O'Neill

A year in review update from Henry Riggs, President of Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences. "Our first class of 28 students is finishing up the first year of the curriculum and headed off for internships. We are in the midst of admitting our second class of students. Applications are up and the quality looks equal to or better than last year. Our faculty has expanded to 8 and we expect to add four more members this fall and will occupy a second building on campus. We have successfully launched our first "spin-out" company --- a very exciting technology in the biotech. We are convinced that our mission gets more compelling and relevant by the day."

FINANCIAL NEWS INSIGHTS

PHILOSOPHICAL CHANGES IN FUNDING:
Tim Bruinsma, Corporate Partner, Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. recently shared some thoughts on corporate trends he is seeing in the marketplace. "The pullback in the technology markets has been a reality check in the venture capital markets. Before the recent market reversal, many venture capital firms found themselves seduced into investing in the earliest stages to avoid missed opportunities. Yet, they were also violating some of their basic investment parameters, such as requiring several years of profitability. Today, in retrospect, many venture capitalists realize that they should have adhered to their traditional investment parameters. Consequently, we are seeing a much more conservative approach."
