Special Message from the Editor:
This months newsletter is dedicated to those who choose
to march to a different drum and adventure to lead us through
the uncertain times of this new economy. For the last few months
I have had the great opportunity to interview and feature some
individuals. They all have demonstrated true leadership qualities
to help shape the economic development for Southern California.
Though many of our leaders are from different disciplines of
industry the one common characteristic found in all of our award
recipients, is their overall commitment to the future of our
society at large. Please join us for the Visionary Forum 2001
on July 18th and meet many of our visionary leaders. For more

CUTTING
THE TIES...
AT&T will Cut its Wireless Business Off July 9, 2001
In
a recent Newark Star article , AT&T announced it will cut
its wireless business loose this month, completing the first
major step in a voluntary breakup of the company. AT&T said
the wireless unit will become fully independent July 9. "It's
a big day for us," said Ritch Blasi, an AT&T Wireless
spokesman. "We're going to celebrate." About 63 percent
of AT&T's interest in the wireless unit will be distributed
to shareholders through a special dividend. Shareholders will
receive roughly a one-third share of AT&T Wireless stock,
which trades under the symbol AWE, for each share of AT&T
common stock they own. Because the company plans to issue only
whole shares of wireless stock, shareholders will get cash for
any fractions they wind up with. The IRS has ruled the transaction
will be tax-free for investors. To qualify for the dividend,
investors had to be AT&T shareholders of record as of June
22.

LEGAL
BRIEFING : Insights From Rose Sorensen, Attorney, Fulbright
& Jaworski L.L.P. "In today's
fast-paced technology era, many companies assume that because
a company pays an employee or independent
contractor to develop property for that company, that property
naturally belongs to that company. However, this is
not always the case. There are affirmative steps that employers
should take in order to secure themselves of such ownership."
