The Life Sciences Agenda
Is Individualized Drug Therapy Just Around the Corner?

Bassil Dahiyat, President and Co-Founder of Monrovia-based Xencor, has announced their exclusive right to license ProCode, a technology that helps scientists better understand how proteins interact with genes. The ProCode technology allows researchers the opportunity to test a potential drug against a variety of proteins all at once, skipping the laborious and time-consuming step of isolating individual proteins, testing to see which react with a new drug, and then backtracking to find the genes that produced them. If one can label all proteins in a cell than one can figure out what drugs are interacting with the proteins.

The discovery could streamline the cost of pharmaceutical companies who spend tens to hundreds of millions in research and development of drug therapies, often only to discover that the product may have unacceptable side effects, sometimes well after it has gone to market.
